EU Bolsters Deeptech Innovation for Sustainable Agrifood

The European Union is actively fostering deeptech innovation within its agrifood sector, recognising its pivotal role in addressing contemporary challenges. With global food security at risk due to climate change, biodiversity loss, and resource scarcity, the EU aims to cultivate a more sustainable production model and reduce reliance on imports. This strategic focus underpins various initiatives designed to equip the sector with cutting-edge technologies and skilled personnel.

A key example is the AgrifoodTECH programme, led by the Polytechnic University of Cartagena. This Horizon project is designed to train 16 postdoctoral researchers, providing them with the necessary skills to drive advancements in agri-food technology. Its objective is to boost and promote technologies that lead to sustainable production models adapted to climate change, thereby strengthening food security. Complementing this, the SIXFOLD project, linked to the ‘Smart Sensors 4 Agri-food’ Partnership, focuses on stimulating innovation experiments in food processing through live demonstrators. SIXFOLD aligns with the twin transition at the heart of the Green Deal and Farm to Fork strategy, emphasising the critical role of deeptech innovation and responsible regulatory frameworks in the agri-food sector.

The broader European innovation landscape also highlights the importance of sustained investment, particularly for early-stage ventures. Recent analysis, such as the report titled Mistral secures €3B Series D, 100 days to save EU Inc, and early-stage funding crisis, points to an ongoing early-stage funding crisis across European tech. This context underscores the necessity for targeted support in critical sectors like agrifood deeptech. Efforts to improve policy-making tools for sustained investment, turning scientific knowledge into business, have been a topic of high-level discussions, as evidenced by the NEXEIA conference on the European Innovation Agenda. Such discussions aim to amplify political messages on the need for continued capital injection into core capabilities.
