French fault-tolerant quantum computing company Alice & Bob has secured additional investment from NVentures, NVIDIA’s venture capital arm, expanding its €100 million Series B round. This capital injection, reported on 2026-05-22, highlights sustained investor interest in European deep tech and the progression of quantum technologies.
The advancement of quantum computing is significantly challenged by the need for fault tolerance, as hardware imperfections inevitably lead to errors. This issue is particularly acute for smaller quantum computing enterprises, which often lack the extensive resources needed for large error-correction teams and the development of sophisticated design tools, placing them at a disadvantage compared to larger competitors.
European projects are actively addressing this. QPRINTS, a HORIZON-EIC-ACC project with an EC maximum contribution of €2,493,000, aims to level the playing field through unique Fault-Tolerant Architectures (FTAs) and design software. Similarly, COMFTQUA, another HORIZON-EIC-ACC-BF project with an EC maximum contribution of €2,499,999, is developing a suite of hardware-agnostic quantum algorithms and implementations to reduce circuit size and improve fidelity on real quantum hardware. The objective across these initiatives, including CatQubit, which focuses on building universal quantum computers with self-correcting cat-qubit technology, is to overcome the critical challenge of error-prone quantum systems. By developing robust error correction mechanisms and efficient algorithms, these projects aim to enable reliable execution of complex quantum algorithms, ultimately paving the way for quantum computers that can perform simulations far beyond the capabilities of current supercomputers.
What this means: This latest investment in Alice & Bob, alongside ongoing EU-funded research, signals a robust commitment to overcoming the foundational technical hurdles in quantum computing. The focus on fault tolerance is critical for transitioning quantum technology from theoretical promise to practical application, reinforcing Europe's position in the global deep tech landscape and accelerating the development of commercially viable quantum solutions.
