Estonia has granted regulatory approval for Bliq.ai to operate its vehicles on public roads without a driver. This development, reported by Tech.eu, represents a notable milestone for autonomous technology in the European Union, indicating progress in the integration of advanced mobility solutions into national infrastructure. The decision positions Estonia as an early adopter in facilitating the deployment of fully driverless systems.
The move comes as European research and innovation continues to address the complexities inherent in achieving widespread autonomous driving. Projects such as TrueSbW (CORDIS: 190106489), funded under HORIZON, have focused on the critical aspect of fail-operational safety for steering and braking systems. This project, which concluded in April 2025 with an EC contribution of nearly €2.5 million, aimed to mature actuator technology to guarantee fail-operational capability, identified as the final step toward fully driverless vehicles.
Further efforts, including the HORIZON-funded ROADVIEW project (CORDIS: 101069576), are tackling the challenges of robust automated driving in complex environments and extreme weather conditions. Running until August 2026 with an EC contribution exceeding €6.6 million, ROADVIEW is developing systems designed to perform reliably under any weather and road condition, moving beyond optimal testing scenarios. Additionally, the MODI project (CORDIS: 101076810) is working to identify and resolve barriers for SAE L4 Connected, Cooperative and Automated Mobility (CCAM) vehicles on public roads, specifically demonstrating solutions for improving logistic chains on the corridor from Rotterdam to Oslo.
What this means: Estonia's regulatory approval for Bliq.ai provides a tangible example and a precedent for the deployment of fully driverless technology. This practical application complements ongoing EU-funded research efforts that are systematically addressing the technical and operational challenges necessary to ensure the safety, reliability, and broad applicability of autonomous vehicles across diverse European operational conditions.
